FATIGUE
Includes all diseases associated with chronic fatigue, including Epstein-Barr, mononucleosis, adrenal fatigue, anemia, and many others.
OTHER NAMES : Chronic fatigue syndrome, exhaustion, tiredness, weakness, weariness.
DESCRIPTION : Fatigue is a state of extreme physical depletion in which the individual is unable to exert physical effort or respond normally to any stimuli because the body's vital powers are sapped. Acute fatigue has a well-defined beginning and is relieved by resting; chronic fatigue is continuous.
SYMPTOMS : Fatigue includes lack of energy, tiredness, weakness, apathy, drowsiness, prostration, and depression. People have been known to sleep up to three to four days when extremely exhausted. There are many accompanying symptoms including joint pains, digestive weakness, nervousness, and lowered resistance to disease.
CAUSES : Normal fatigue may result from acute or prolonged physical or emotional stress. Examples of physical stress are overexertion, heat exposure, illness, fever, malnutrition, allergies, and exposure to drugs, chemicals, and environmental pollutants. Emotional stress generally has its origin in major life changes, in socioeconomic conditions, and in the quality of relationships with others at home, at work, and in society in general.
TREATMENT : Where appropriate, treat the cause of the underlying stress. For acute fatigue, pay attention to your body and it will tell you how much rest it needs to recover. For chronic fatigue, the conditions that promote the rejuvenation of vitality are rest, good nourishment, appropriate physical exercise, a clean environment, and avoidance of physical and emotional stress.
Wholesome foods described in the macrodiet are combined with various tonic herbs according to the condition. These include ginseng ( Panax ginseng ), astragalus ( A. membranicus ), and suma ( Pfaffia paniculata ), taken to tonify energy; dong quai ( Angelica sinensis ) and yellow dock root ( Rumex crispus ), taken to tonify blood; rehmannia root ( Rehmannia glutinosa ), American ginseng ( P. quinquefolia ), ophiopogon ( O. japonicus ) and lycii berries ( Lycium chinensis ), Iceland moss ( Cetraria islandica ), taken to tonify body essence. These can be combined and taken as a tea, porridge or soup. The ginseng formula number 40 can be simmered into a stock in which some organic meat or rice porridge is cooked. For vegetarians, these herbs can be taken as a powder, tablet, or extract along with a glass of boiled warm milk in which is added a few slices of fresh ginger and a teaspoon of honey. Such an herb food is taken once or twice daily.
There are many Planetary formulas that are useful for fatigue. But first, trying to determine the cause of the fatigue and rectifying it is of primary importance. Next, one can select formula number 38 (Ginseng Classic), based on the Four Noble Herbs of Chinese medicine, to tonify qi (vital energy) and improve digestion. Ginseng Elixir is particularly useful for prolapsed conditions associated with fatigue. It is a primary formula to be used for Epstein-Barr virus and chronic fatigue syndrome. Ginseng Revitalizer combines five different types of ginseng with dong quai and other herbs to raise vitality.
